The fear of dentists causes millions of people to neglect their oral health for years and often results in emergency dental visits that can re-enforce their fears. Finding a Dentist that is compassionate and understanding towards patients suffering from anxiety can be difficult; and for these patients it is crucial to be able to feel comfortable about discussing their fears and building trust in their dentist. Dr. Spelman has experience working with patients who suffer from varying degrees of anxiety. With over 30 years of experience Dr. Spelman can make you feel comfortable and put you at ease using an anxiety free dentistry method.
Patients with dental anxiety often find themselves having feelings of nervousness, restlessness, and even become nauseous while sitting in a Dentist’s waiting room. They often come in and express how much they “Hate” dentist’s, followed by “no offense doctor,” or how they’d rather give birth than have a root canal. Having such a severe fear of dentists can become paralyzing to some, so it is important to find a doctor that is understanding and instills trust in the patient.
After waiting long periods of time between visits because of fear, a patient may need several procedures done, which can cause even more anxiety. Often the longer a patient goes without treatment, the more self conscious they become and as a result continue to put off much needed Dental care. It is important to know that not all Dentists’ are created equally, some cause fear, some add to it, and some help you work through it.
If you are the type of patient described above you may be interested in our anxiety-free Dentistry. Here at Dr. Spelman’s office we can help you with this type of anxiety by providing a sedative to be taken before your procedure to help relax and put you at ease. For patients whose nerves won’t allow them to sleep well the night before a procedure, we may also recommend a sedative to be taken the night before a procedure.
After an anxiety-free treatment you will have little or no memory of the visit and the discomfort from the procedure will be minimal. For your safety we will require that you have a friend or relative drive you to and from your appointment and keep you company for a few hours following the appointment.
Dr. Spelman takes the mental health of patients as serious as their oral health and will do what he can to make you comfortable about your visit. If you find yourself being overly nervous and anxious at the thought of seeing a Dentist, anxiety free dentistry may be for you. Feel free to call and communicate your fears before you come in by calling and talking to one of our staff; they will go over your options and help put you at ease before your visit.
